In sudden move, city council terminates volunteer fire department contract

The Meadville City Council terminated their contract with Volunteer Fire Department 39 tonight.

The move was a last-minute addition to the meeting’s agenda.

Councilman Jason Amory said that the contract was terminated due to concerns about Dept. 39’s safety.

“We don’t feel confident that they were operating in a safe manner,” he said after the meeting. Amory added that no VFDs from surrounding towns were willing to call Dept. 39 for aid, although those nearby VFDs had previously come to fight fires in Meadville.

The City aims to charter another VFD eventually, with “individuals we feel qualify,” Amory said.
